National Coalition for the Homeless
About us
The US has witnessed a sharp rise in people sleeping outside since 2020, and at the same time an increase in the use of law enforcement to manage a social service issue. NCH intends to work to create an equitable shelter system and a healthcare and social services response to homelessness. We want to listen to the community's needs by having "boots on the ground" around the US especially in areas with large homeless populations. NCH staff will work with the local advocates on solving problems then amplifying their voices in the nation's capital, and leaving behind leadership development tools to fertilize the growth of advocacy led by previously homeless individuals.
NCH will seek to expand our network of grassroots organizations while also expanding the number of national groups working on addressing homelessness. We will build a network of local groups and maintain contact with them over the next few years. We will inform them of the national advocacy efforts and gather input from those experiencing homelessness on what should be the priority in DC. At the national level, we intend to reach out to advocacy groups including traditional civil rights groups, healthcare organizations, disability rights groups, and criminal justice reform organizations. We will work to convince them to include homelessness in their legislation strategy because housing instability complicates every issue. We need an "all ideas on the table" approach to this crisis. NCH will work to broaden our network beyond the traditional housing groups.
