Megaphone
About us
Megaphone exists to change the story on poverty, by promoting social equity, amplifying marginalized voices and creating meaningful work. We create low-barrier incoming earning opportunities by producing literary and journalistic publications and training people experiencing poverty and intersecting marginalizations in Vancouver to sell those products for an income. Megaphone works at the intersection of social service and cultural programming, to create platforms for expression and self-directed, empowering employment opportunities while building grassroots support to end poverty: Megaphone magazine is now led by a peer newsroom and includes community journalism addressing topics related to chronic poverty and homelessness; Voices of the Street annual literary edition features poetry and prose written by people experiencing poverty who participate in our vendor program or community writing workshops; and Hope in Shadows calendar is produced by engaging 100+ community members in a photography contest to capture moments of hope and resolve in the face of poverty. Through our publications, the means by which they are created and sold, Megaphone fosters community engagement, awareness, and support for people experiencing extreme poverty and other intersecting marginalizations.
