Laborers of the Harvest
About us
Laborers of the Harvest (LOTH) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that recovers surplus wholesome foods from reputable food generators and transforms them into essential resources for those facing food and nutrition insecurity. LOTH’s mission to remain a consistent and abundant source of food provided in a loving and supportive environment is achieved through these programs:A. EDIBLE FOOD RECOVERY PROGRAM: LOTH recovers perfectly good unsold food from grocery stores, farms, schools, venues, caterers, and other food establishments across Kern, Fresno, and Tulare Counties, seven days a week.B. FOOD REDISTRIBUTION PROGRAM: Recovered food is redistributed through its Open Harvest Program and through local nonprofit partners, widening collective reach. C. OPEN HARVEST PROGRAM: A community staple, LOTH offers affordable, high-quality, culturally diverse and nutritious food to economically disadvantaged individuals who often don’t qualify for food assistance due to income or immigration status. For $10 (waived for unhoused clients), guests fill three bags of groceries, providing 23 meals for their households at just 43 cents per meal. The program creates a welcoming, dignified shopping experience with no questions asked.LOTH also aims to launch HANDS ON HEALTH, a new educational program committed to advancing awareness of Open Harvest events and other resources to promote access to quality foods for low income and unhoused Kern County community members. LOTH estimates over 15,000 unique community members served each year through its programs, many of whom are repeat food recipients and rely on this valuable resource.
