Ignited Light assists South Los Angeles marginalized single mothers who are unemployed or underemployed due to systemic social disparities. Their annual earnings do not adequately cover basic monthly needs.

The three leading causes of death among this population are heart disease, cancer, and stroke (CDC, 2017). Women who are juggling the responsibility of solely managing a household with minimal financial support, run the risk of increased health concerns due to stress. Consequently, the high cost of medical care, coupled with the lack of knowledge of affordable healthcare services available, often deters women facing these obstacles from seeking the sustainable care needed to adequately provide for them and their families.

Annually, Ignited Light partners with local businesses, city municipalities, and local residences to host the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service. Since 2016, this community collaboration provides free medical, legal, dental, employment services, housing information, and food distribution to South Los Angeles residents, gender notwithstanding. Providing services to the organization’s target population transcends to other members of their families. In turn, the community benefits from the residual effects of a stronger family foundation; mind, body, and spirit
