Friends of Brooklyn Park administers and funds the free Summer Youth Program at Brooklyn Park in Portland, Oregon. The Brooklyn Park Summer Youth Program has been a hub of activities and belonging for 50 years. Countless kids and parents have enjoyed its purpose, and have gained from it.All of the program activities center around "The Shack." Built in 1957 it is brick outbuilding that has one door and is filled with all the games, tables, furniture and supplies of the program. But it is much more than just a small, public structure. It is the summer "hang out" for neighborhood children. From noon till 8 o'clock they enter and exit with the same ease and comfort of home. Years and years of artwork and saved memories cover the walls. It is a place of belonging for youth in the Brooklyn area; which doesn't have a community center, library, or neighborhood school.
