Our History – Caring for Animals since 1914
It was February in the year 1914. Concerned citizens were worried about the transport of horses in railway cars for long hours without food and water for the war effort. They took action and came together for a meeting in the Fredericton City Council Chambers to establish the Fredericton SPCA. The proceedings were overseen by the mayor of the day, Mr. W.S. Hooper. That was just the beginning.
Sixty years later, this SPCA branch society built its first animal shelter on Montgomery Street in November of 1974. During that first year, the shelter received 600 animals. By 1977, the number of animals taken in was up to 900 and that figure skyrocketed to 1,655 in 1989. The numbers became overwhelming so we changed directions in how we took in animals. We worked with the community to help foster the animals and encouraged owners to locate homes for their pets and educated them on how to handle behaviour problems so that they can keep them. In 2013 the Fredericton SPCA received 809 animals which was a drop, and we believe it was due to the efforts of the community working with us.
Today, we recently changed the name of our facilities to the Fredericton SPCA Animal Adoption Centre. While part of our mandate is obviously sheltering, we feel this title better reflects the broader mandate of providing public education, in addition to the care and hope, and most importantly the end result that we look to achieve in finding animals their forever homes.
Our goal is also to take care of the people who take care of the animals by creating a resilient environment that is non-judgmental, stays curious and supports each other. We are building a healthy organization inside and out as we enter a new century of progress. We hope that you will consider joining our family as a member, volunteer and/or sponsor. It’s your support that makes the difference!
