Providing Opportunities to People on dialysis. Dialysis Escape Line Australia (DELA) is a unique, volunteer-operated organisation that provides support for renal patients undergoing dialysis for kidney failure – a regime that involves 4-5 hours of treatment, 3-5 times a week, every week – sometimes for years on end. For each getaway, DELA provides a travelling medical team, including a Nephrologist, 4 renal trained nurses and a technician for the dialysis equipment. While medical staff generously volunteer their time, DELA funds their travel and accommodation expenses and the cost of all medical supplies (such as dialysers, blood lines, saline and oxygen) and transport of all equipment (including 4 x dialysis machines) at a total cost of approximately $25,000 per trip. DELA receives no government funding and so must rely on membership fees, fundraising and community support to maintain current levels of service provision. Overall, our temporary dialysis units give patients the opportunity to ‘get away’ from their regular treatment routine and enjoy a holiday in a supportive environment – which also provides respite for their carer/partner. Given that the dialysis-dependent population continues to increase, fuelled by the ageing population and Type 2 Diabetes epidemic, it is vital that DELA is able to maintain current levels of service provision in 2019 and beyond.
