Cholmondeley Children’s Centre has been supporting Canterbury tamariki and their whānau since 1925, providing a safe, nurturing environment for children aged 5–12 during times of stress or crisis. Our short-term respite care gives families space to rest, recover, and access additional support while their tamariki enjoy structured, engaging, and trauma-informed care. Over the decades, we’ve supported more than 33,000 children, helping families feel stronger and more connected.

Our programmes focus on holistic child wellbeing, combining social, emotional, and physical development. Tamariki participate in activities that build confidence, life skills, and independence, from outdoor challenges to cooking and self-care lessons. Every activity is designed to foster self-esteem, social connection, and a sense of accomplishment, while ensuring children feel safe, heard, and valued.

Beyond the centre, our Awhi Team walks alongside whānau in their own homes, offering social work, youth support, and whānau ora guidance. By providing practical assistance, advocacy, and emotional support, the Awhi Team helps families navigate challenges and build resilience, creating lasting impact that extends well beyond a child’s stay at Cholmondeley.

Cholmondeley relies on community support to keep our doors open, as government funding only covers about 20% of our nearly $2.7 million annual operating costs. Donations and grants allow us to continue providing life-changing experiences, essential care, and family support for children and whānau when they need it most.
