Chicago Roo Crew is a 100% volunteer grassroots rooster focused rescue. We are a network of rescuers, foster homes, transporters and microsanctuaries. We do direct rescue of dumped birds on Chicago's streets, work closely with animal shelters and provide free community outreach, education and support on chicken care. We advocate for care in accordance with the standards of the Illinois Humane Care for Animals Act, and even further, in accordance with the specialized care standards that we believe these special birds deserve. We advocate in particular against rooster stigma as roosters are the worst treated land animal on the planet, and are very badly misunderstood. While they are popularly and wrongly considered to be generally aggressive, unfriendly and noisy, we who know them understand that roosters are anything but the stereotypes imposed on them. We seek to dismantle the false conceptions that surround roosters, support them and the communities who love them, and promote them as the wonderful companions that they truly are. A companion rooster is one of the best friends you can possibly have. A good part of our work involves getting birds in urgent need appropriate and necessary veterinary care. Most dumped birds come to us with medical needs ranging from frostbite, predator injuries, illnesses such as upper respiratory infections, and parasite infestation, among other issues. We are so lucky to have wonderful veterinarians at Niles Animal Hospital and Bird Medical Center who always support us and our bird friends to the best of their ability. Even with generous rescue discounts great veterinary care can be very expensive, and with a recent massive uptick in dumped birds, we really need support to make sure that we can consistently provide these abandoned birds with the standard of care that they deserve. Our amazing veterinarians provide us with careful diagnostics, medication and other therapies, and when necessary hospitalization. Our organizers and team have spent thousands of dollars of our own money to secure this care for our friends, but going forward we are going to need more help.
