About us
The Association for Scottish Literature is an educational charity promoting the languages and literature of Scotland. We publish classic works of Scottish literature which have either been neglected or which merit a fresh presentation to a modern audience; scholarly essays, monographs and journals on the literature and languages of Scotland; and Scotnotes, a series of study guides to major Scottish writers. We also produce New Writing Scotland, an annual anthology of contemporary poetry and prose in English, Gaelic and Scots. We have members in Scotland and around the world who receive a range of books and periodicals in return for their subscription. Membership of ASL is open to all who support the aims of the Association. ASL publications are available both through subscription and through the book trade, and a number of publications and educational resources are made available for free download from our website.
ASL Conferences address different aspects of Scottish literature and language, their roles in education and daily life. Since our foundation in 1970, both through our Conferences and our publications, ASL has made a significant contribution to the development and study of Scotland’s literary culture, both in Scotland and around the world.
