Wheeler Mission is the oldest, and largest, homeless services provider in the state of Indiana. As the ‘front door to homelessness’ in Indianapolis, Wheeler Mission meets the short-term needs of those on the streets by providing a nutritious meal, a hot shower, and a clean bed to those in the most need. In fact, Wheeler Mission served over 335,000 meals to 9,600 unique men, women, and children in 2019. However, the goal for Wheeler Mission has remained the same since its creation in 1893; to equip everyone served for lasting success. Staff encourage guests to pursue a long-term program to begin unpacking and addressing the root causes of their homelessness. Programming includes assistance in addressing addiction, job-training, developing life skills, and access to education (just to name a few). The curriculum is faith-based and holistic and comes with access to a case manager and extensive counseling. There is not a ‘one size fits all’ approach to addressing homelessness, so programming and services are designed to address the unique challenges of every individual served.
