About us
Walsall Society for the Blind provide support, advice, information and friendship to the blind and partially sighted people in Walsall, an areas in the top 10% for deprivation in England.
Our services include:
Community outreach
Mental Walsall Society for the Blind provides advice, information, friendship and support to anyone affected by sight loss living in Walsall, one of the most deprived boroughs in the whole of England.
Through our service provision we empower the visually impaired community of Walsall to retain their independence, maintain their mental health and wellbeing and reduce their isolation.
Our sight loss support services include:
• Community outreach: practical one-to-one information and advice to visually impaired individuals via phone calls, letters and home visits. This reduces social isolation and provides ongoing support and timely interventions for those with sight loss.
• Mental Health and Wellbeing support: a listening ear and practical assistance and solutions to mental and physical wellbeing issues. Supporting independence and resilience building.
• Social activity centre: providing a variety of inclusive activities, peer support and day trips to reduce social isolation and increase daily interactions with others.
• Talking newspaper and magazine service: a lifeline for many, full of local news and stories which keep our sight loss community informed and engaged.
• Assistive Technology support: training and support on smart phones, tablets, screen readers, magnifiers and other gadgets to assist daily living and to increase accessibility to online resources and information.
• Equipment and loans services: providing the opportunity for individuals to try out aids and adaptations to support them to live independently.
• We also provide transcription services and training sessions for local businesses to ensure that those with sight loss are well supported in workplaces, hospitals other settings across the borough.
