The Center sits amid four units of public housing and two units of mixed housing, with a population of primarily African American and Latino, the majority being low to moderate income. With a mission of “We Reach and We Serve,” the Center stays in tune with what’s happening in the community and responds by providing direct services, starting a new service if none exists, referrals and advocacy. In 2020 during the pandemic, we started a food pantry to answer the needs of the food insecure; in 2017 when an elder fell in her apartment and was found two weeks later, we started a drop in center for seniors to address isolation; in 2013, we started the Haitian Resource Center when we were unable to find a program to assist a Haitian American. Other programs and services include empowerment groups for high school boys and girls, youth employment services, after school enrichment, senior theatre workshop. We provide space for a library, a college and careers program and Narcotics Anonymous. We are in need of funding to continue, enhance and expand our good work.
