The Helix School
About us
The Helix School serves neurodivergent children, specializing in Autism, from ages 5 to 22, who live throughout the Bay Area. The Helix School was founded in 2015 by a mom who couldn’t find the right educational setting for her son. She wanted to offer neurodivergent students a chance: A chance to advocate for themselves, to grow comfortable in their bodies, to learn not only academics, but about the world and all the connectivity that comes from understanding relationships. She wanted kids to experience the joy of sharing their passions and to learn to love school again. She brought together educators and therapists who share the same vision: to change the educational system for children who are neurodiverse, with a focus on children diagnosed with autism.
The school’s vision and mission are based on providing an education that nurtures and develops students' capabilities through an evidence-based, integrated curriculum. Our methodology is tailored to support our student's development, sensory processing differences, and emotional-regulatory needs. Our talented staff is comprised of educators, occupational, speech, behavioral therapists, and mental health professionals. The Helix School also provides services that benefit and support the Bay Area public school district.
We work with the whole child. Cognitive, language, social-emotional, and sensory-motor systems need to function together to help students reach their full potential. We teach in small-group formats that support individual needs while allowing participation in larger groups as students become increasingly social. Our Integrated Curriculum includes speech and language, emotional regulation, sensory-motor skills in occupational therapy, life skills, math, language arts, science, social studies, art, drama, and music. Our teachers work on objectives in each key developmental and academic area, taking advantage of natural opportunities to incorporate goals into every activity. Generalization is a primary goal, ensuring that a child can meet a skill in multiple environments and with different communication partners before that goal is considered fully achieved.
