About us

Set up by a group of parents in Swindon in 1984, CALM is a registered charity that supports children diagnosed with cancer. 40 years on, the charity continues to be run on a purely voluntary basis. Running costs are kept to a minimum, ensuring resources go directly to help children and their families. CALM supports children who receive treatment at the Great Western Hospital. When a child is diagnosed with cancer it can have a physical, emotional and financial strain on the whole family. Families supported by CALM become part of one big family, giving support to each other. Some of the ways CALM offers support: Financial support: When a child or teenager is diagnosed with cancer, it can place a considerable financial strain on the family. The cost of travelling to hospital, parking and eating out can quickly add up. CALM provides grants to families to help with these expenses. Emotional support: Families can feel reassured, knowing there is someone there to talk to who really does understand what they are going through. This is extremely important too, when sadly a family is bereaved. Caravan holidays: Most families would not consider a holiday during treatment, because of the risk of losing money should the child need to be admitted to hospital. CALM has three caravans that families can use free of charge. CALM also provides spending money so families can enjoy quality time together. Day trips: Children with cancer lead a very different life to other children. As well as physical changes like hair loss, treatment can also result in a weakened immune system. Many children with cancer go through periods when they cannot mix with other children or do activities other children take for granted. Day trips provide an opportunity for children and their families to do “normal” things and get together away from the stresses of the hospital environment. Coffee mornings: We hold regular coffee mornings which give the children a chance to play together and parents a chance to share their experiences and concerns.
