The Akari Foundation exists to close the cultural and linguistic gaps that prevent Hispanic families affected by Duchenne muscular dystrophy and other rare diseases from accessing the care, information, and community they deserve. As the only organization in the United States dedicated to serving this population entirely in Spanish, we provide education, advocacy, and direct support that is culturally responsive and language accessible.Our work addresses a critical systemic barrier: the absence of equitable healthcare access for Spanish-speaking families navigating rare disease diagnoses. We offer bilingual resources, guidance on clinical trials, healthcare navigation, and psychosocial support—all designed with and for the communities we serve. Support from this grant would enable us to expand our reach through virtual programming, strengthen our partnerships with medical and research institutions, and continue developing resources that inform and empower families who are too often left behind.
