The Skeena Knowledge Trust (SKT) is a charitable organization established with the aim to address the need for greater knowledge management and more informed decision-making pertaining to salmon and salmon habitat within the Skeena River watershed and estuary. Since its foundation in 2017, the SKT has collaborated with numerous stakeholders and organizations within the Skeena watershed, including First Nations communities, provincial and federal government agencies, and watershed community groups. Our governance model includes a strong emphasis on following OCAP® principles, encouraging collaboration around watershed. The knowledge tools of the SKT, comprising the Skeena Maps Portal and the Skeena Salmon Data Centre (SSDC), are essential for informed decisions on land use, conservation, and restoration, safeguarding ecosystems and supporting communities. Effective knowledge management and data sharing are vital for conservation efforts, particularly for communities relying on watershed health for livelihoods. The SKT facilitates collaboration and seamless data flow across the Skeena region, providing training for data management. Establishing connections with First Nations and community groups is crucial for building trust in data sharing, respecting their structures and beliefs. We aim to gather community perspectives on data management and decision-making in the Skeena region, building towards healthy salmon ecosystems.
