At SARA, we aim to create a positive future for endangered sharks and rays, including sawfish. We partner with Aboriginal Land and Sea ranger groups, to enable stewardship for these iconic species by First Nations people. Our conservation efforts are based on sound science, and engagement of stakeholders. We conduct various research projects, including field work in Far North Queensland and the Cape York region, and an Australia-wide citizen science program. We also regularly engage with local schools on our field trips, to empower future generations to protect local ecosystems on country.

Our work is extremely varied. From collaborative field work, tracking sawfish in the wild, and collecting environmental DNA, to creating sawfish displays for Queensland’s pubs and tourist information centres, to providing expert input in governmental working groups based on our scientific work, we know that all the pieces of the puzzle together form the bigger picture. As not all of our projects are always fully funded, we rely on donors to help us bridge the gaps.
