In Australia, more than one woman EVERY WEEK is killed by an intimate partner. Last year there were 51,445 reported incidents of family violence which represents approximately 10% of all violent attacks. All the refuges and shelters are full There is a severe shortage of safe, appropriate and available temporary accommodation. Often homelessness is the only option. 78% of Australian homes have a spare room that is not being used 90% of the time. Safe Haven Community helps women escape abusive relationships BEFORE they escalate to violent relationships. We find the people with the spare rooms, and match them with women and their children that need a safe place to stay. Safety is a basic human right, and our community is responsible for helping to provide that. We're a very small charity but we do really big work.
