Resilient Reefs was the first to practice reef restoration on the Great Barrier Reef. We operate a network of ocean-based midwater coral nurseries at Fitzroy Island in Australiaās Wet Tropics region. Our focus is on species richness and genetic diversity within species. Corals are placed in our nurseries to spawn and to add billions of corals to the system. We donāt outplant corals to the reef as coral gardeners do. We practice ocean-based coral aquaculture. We preserve the spawning stock in the nurseries by lowering the nurseries into cooler, deepwater during marine heatwaves that are occurring more frequently and with greater intensity causing periodic coral bleaching and, increasingly, coral mortality. We are currently developing a Coral Conservation Centre on Fitzroy Island that will feature a visitor centre and a land-based coral aquaculture facility that will complement our ocean-based activities.
