Read NZ Te Pou Muramura
About us
We want to grow a nation of readers. Having good Literacy skills directly impacts on a persons future prosperity and well being.
Read NZ Te Pou Muramura (formerly NZ Book Council) helps grow the next generation of readers by delivering programmes in schools to encourage students, especially the most disadvantaged students, to read and write. Our Writers in Schools programme has been at the core of our charity work for over forty years. It inspires tens-of-thousands of children and teenagers to develop a love of reading and writing by bringing a writer or illustrator into their classroom.
We run programmes to encourage reluctant readers to read. In 2019 we are launching a social media campaign aimed to get men reading more. This summer we are joining with NZ Cricket to run a reading competition for children over the summer holidays.
We conduct research into New Zealanders reading habits which we then use to develop programmes to inspire more reading.
Through our website we support writers by developing Writers files, advertising reader and writer events and developing blog posts about all things literary.
We offer membership for schools, libraries, individuals and corporates and keep our members up-to-date with what is happening in the literature sector in monthly newsletters.
