PROSAMI: Proof That Safe Childbirth Is Possible — Everywhere

Every year, hundreds of thousands of mothers in the Democratic Republic of the Congo face childbirth without access to skilled care. PROSAMI is changing that — one woman, one delivery, one community at a time.

Since 2009, Promotion de la Santé Maternelle et Infantile (PROSAMI) has worked to prove that maternal death is preventable, even in the world's most under-resourced settings. Our answer: put skilled, respectful midwifery care within reach of every mother, regardless of her ability to pay.

The results speak for themselves.

At our pilot center in Mbuji-Mayi, we have overseen more than 2,500 deliveries — with zero maternal deaths — since opening in 2018. In a country where the maternal mortality ratio stands at 427 per 100,000 live births, that is not a coincidence. It is a model.

In 2025, when we partnered with the national Health Solidarity Fund to eliminate user fees, deliveries at our center rose 329% in a single year. Mothers didn't need convincing to seek safe care — they needed the barriers removed.
