People First NZ is an organisation that is governed by, led by and for members with learning disability. We have 41 groups throughout New Zealand where members meet monthly to learn about their rights and how to speak up in their lives, communities, nationally and in some cases internationally. Our members learn to speak up and be heard on things that are important in their own lives in government, in services and in the wider community. People First promotes the rights of people with learning disabilities and represent people with learning disability who cannot speak for themselves. There are very few places people with learning disability can go and be in charge of their meetings and agendas, or have meetings that are accessible. At People First meetings, members get to develop presentation skills and group work skills. They have a place to celebrate their achievements, learn about their rights and share their issues. People First is also a Disability Information and Advice Service which benefits our members, whanau, disability support services and the wider community. People First also offers opportunities for members to participate in courses and programmes that empower them to be self-advocates, to be safe physically, emotionally and financially. We work hard for and with the members in accessible ways, which includes Easy Read. We allow time for people to have their say, and listen to them carefully.
