Oregon Food Bank (OFB) is facing challenges such as an extraordinary increase in food requests due to the coronavirus pandemic, its economic repercussions and wildfire devastation. We are adjusting our food distributions and redirecting resources to keep the flow of food steady in an evolving and complex environment. Before the pandemic, the OFB Network of 21 regional food banks and 1,400 food assistance sites provided food to 860,000 people annually, including approximately 265,000 children, in Oregon and Clark County, Washington. The current crises mean that an estimated 1 in 6 people in Oregon are now struggling to access sufficient nutritious food and childhood food insecurity is 24% or nearly 1 in 4 (Feeding America, 10/2020). In addition, the pandemic has laid bare the disparities in underserved communities, with Black and Hispanic headed households facing greater rates of hospitalization, as they have been twice as likely to be hungry, as white households (USDA, 2018; OHA, 2020). OFB is ready to meet the developing needs of our community head-on. But in this moment, we need your help to feed and support our community through this crisis.
