OHW builds the capacity of the local government to implement a sustainable continuum of Maternal and Newborn Health (MNH) care in their communities so that every pregnant woman and newborn infant may have access to the services they need. Our model, the Network of Safety, partners directly with local governments and communities to identify and address specific existing barriers, systemic weaknesses, and local socio-cultural and political contexts that affect pregnancy and childbirth. We then develop appropriate solutions that reflect local cultural values, fostering local ownership from inception and maximizing our impact. Our model leverages time-bound philanthropic support with a proven exit-strategy: the government and local communities co-invest in, then fully maintain delivery of our intervention once outcomes goals are achieved post-program completion, ensuring long-term impact sustainability. Preparing for this handover is central to our model: OHW actively engages local government members and community stakeholders throughout the process to ensure alignment with local priorities, and we drive local and national policy changes that prioritize MNH needs to unlock long-term budget allocations. By aligning with local priorities and building relevant knowledge within municipalities, we encourage communities to co-fund the program and ultimately prepare them for post-implementation ownership. Through our unique approach, we are changing MNH care in rural Nepal, building strong local capacity in the rural municipalities, and promoting self-reliance for MNH care among local communities.
