Melanoma Institute Australia
About us
Melanoma Institute Australia (MIA) pioneers advances in melanoma research and treatment that are making a difference to the lives of patients today.
MIA is a non-profit organisation dedicated to the goal of zero deaths from melanoma, a goal we aim to achieve through innovative, world-class research, treatment and education programs.
MIA is a national affiliated network of melanoma researchers and clincians based in Sydney at The Poche Centre – the world’s largest melanoma research and treatment facility. From here, our melanoma specialists treat 1500 melanoma patients a year, develop new research strategies and priorities, conduct clinical trials, and promote awareness of melanoma and sun safety in all areas of the community.
Recent breakthroughs, driven by Melanoma Institute Australia, have tripled life expectancy for advcanced melanoma patients. Our ultimate goal is zero deaths from melanoma.
Prevention of melanoma remains a critical area, with sun safety paramount. UV exposure leading to sunburn, is the single greatest risk factor for developing melanoma.
Melanoma kills one Australian every five hours and is the most common cancer in 15 to 39 year old Australians.
