Based in Tucson, Arizona, Make Way for Books’ mission is to give all children the chance to read and succeed. For more than 23 years, we have worked to ensure that young children develop the skills they need to thrive by reaching them with meaningful early literacy experiences. Make Way for Books provides proven early literacy programming to more than 30,000 children, families, and educators throughout Tucson and southern Arizona each year. Our highest priority is to reach underserved, economically disadvantaged young children (ages birth to 5). We build on the latest research to provide innovative and proven programs that ensure young children have meaningful early literacy and learning experiences and develop foundational literacy and language skills they need to succeed in school and throughout life. Through a two-generation approach, our model builds children’s early literacy skills while developing the capacities, confidence, and knowledge of their parents and caregivers. Across our program strategies, 94% of children develop emergent literacy and language skills and 99% of parents gain confidence and skills to be their child’s first, best teacher. Based on a sample of children who participated in Make Way for Books programs in their Pre-K years, 75% went on to score at or above benchmarks in reading assessments in kindergarten, first, second, and third grades.
