We offer retired law enforcement, military, and contract working dogs a comfortable and peaceful retirement home. Our mission is to give them a stress-free space where they can unwind after the demanding environments of their working lives. They enjoy climate-controlled indoor living, complete routine and emergency medical care (including specialized, veterinarian-prescribed diets), toys, exercise yards, and plenty of personal attention. Some of these dogs even become goodwill ambassadors at public events, helping raise awareness about the vital and often overlooked roles they’ve played in national and homeland security. We welcome working dogs (K9s, MWDs, and CWDs) when their handlers are unable to care for them, often due to PTSD or other medical challenges.

K9 Hero Haven receives working dogs (K9’s) from many municipal, county, and federal law enforcement organizations.  We also receive contract working dogs (CWD’s) from various contractors serving the Department of Homeland Security, Treasury Department, Department of Agriculture, and civilian contractors supporting the Department of Defense.  Military working dogs (MWD’s) are specifically from the various branches of the US military.  The MWD’s and those CWD’s serving DoD served time primarily in places such as Iraq, Afghanistan, and other middle eastern nations.

 As working dogs age and are no longer able to meet the standards necessary to perform their duties in harsh working environments, they’re removed from service.  However, their handlers may not necessarily be removed from duty.  Many of the working dogs have PTSD and/or issues of aggression and anxiety.  Some also develop physical diseases such as cancer, arthritis, and other medical issues requiring specialized diets to prolong their lives.  Most government agencies lack the financial and physical resources necessary to shelter and care for those dogs.  Consequently, the unfortunate reality is that many of them are euthanized.  At K9 Hero Haven, we care for those we’re able to receive.  Our belief is that those dogs that gave so much of their minds and bodies to help ensure our safety deserve to have a safe, comfortable place to retire and decompress.
