The Heard Natural Science Museum and Wildlife Sanctuary was founded in 1965 by Miss Bessie Heard, with the mission to educate and inspire by connecting people to the natural world. Centered around environmental stewardship and education, the Heard takes great measures to conserve and protect the 289-acre nature preserve that Bessie Heard set aside for future generations to experience and enjoy. The Heard is home to 5 distinct habitats: bottomland forest, upland forest, white rock escarpment, wetlands, and Blackland Prairie–one of the most endangered habitats in the world. These habitats are foundational to the Heard’s conservation efforts and environmental education opportunities provided to visitors of all ages. From interactive exhibits and nature trails to summer camps and field research programs, the Heard connects people to the natural world with meaning, and intent.
