About us

The Hawk Migration Association (HMA) was founded in 1974 and is incorporated as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization in the State of New York.  For over 50 years, HMA has been the international leader and model of conservation excellence that creates a better world for raptors and people. With our partners, volunteers, and supporters, we work on the ground throughout the Americas advancing conservation through the study, enjoyment and appreciation of raptors and their migration. HMA oversees the collection of spring and fall count data from over two hundred affiliated raptor monitoring sites throughout North, Central and South America and houses these data in HawkCount.org, the largest migration monitoring community science database in the world. HMA is a driving force behind the Raptor Population Index (RPI) partnership which analyzes long-term raptor migration data to asses the health of raptor populations. Together with our partners, we collect, manage, analyze and publish the only long-term, continent-wide raptor population science that is the vital foundation of successful raptor conservation efforts. HMA supports the monitoring network by providing standardized protocol and datasheets, educational resources, annual grants to watch sites and more. We publish a semi-annual journal Hawk Migration Studies, which includes seasonal reports on the migration and we offer international raptor-focused tours. Our staff and board of directors focus on a rich diversity of programs including Winter Raptor Survey - a community science effort monitoring the winter movements of raptors throughout the Americas, our Junior Hawkwatcher Program - connecting youth with hawkwatching, monitoring monarch butterfly populations during migration and addressing climate change concerns and its effect on migration.
