About us
The Grand was built in 1938 as a movie theater to anchor economic recovery after the devastating fire of 1933. The introduction of television brought about many years of decline. The Grand faced demolition in 1975 when members of the arts and cultural community recognized its vital importance to Ellsworth and Hancock County. The Grand is a historic venue that presents arts and entertainment, including film, live broadcasts, music, theater, and education. PAC (Performing Arts for Children) has over 4,000 points of contact with area students annually, offering low ticket fees for live theater, film, and music and supporting artists. Recent programming included the premiere of the movie Lost in a Mountain in Maine, a tour of Heroes of the Underground for Black History Month, and the premiere of Blueberries for Sal.
The Grand offers Audio descriptions for movies and live events to improve accessibility for the blind and sight-challenged and improved captioning and hearing assistance for the deaf and hard-of-hearing community,
