We are the main rescue group for domestically bred skunks in the State of Florida.  We not only rescue pet skunks within the State but sometimes through the U.S.  Skunks are bred for pets and sold to pet shop.  These shops, in order to make a sale, do not fully inform purchasers of the personality or correct care of a pet skunk, and they sometimes find themselves in over their head especially with a baby skunk.  Other times, people live in a rental and don't ask their landlord permission before obtaining a skunk and when the landlord objects, the skunk has to go.  Last, skunk are not legal to own as pets in all States and each legal State has it's own set of rules about skunk ownership.  If the skunk owner is moving to another State, even if legal, they may not be able to take their skunk with them.  The skunk owner is a quandry about what to do with their precious pet.  Dog and cat shelters won't take a skunk, there isn't a shelter just for exotic pets, and they can't let it go into the wild as it's been descented and has no means of defense. This is where Florida Skunk Rescue steps in.  We take the skunks in, foster them, get them medical care including a spay or neuter, foster them, and when they are ready, we find them a forever home.  This year we had a skunk that injured his back leg and had to have it amputated.  We are a 501(c)(3) non-profit and run by all volunteers.  Our main source of funding is through donations by taking the skunks to adoption events, schools, and nursing homes to raise awareness about our group.  People that come to see us love the skunks as the may be getting their first opportunity to see a skunk up close and personal - and best of all, they won't get sprayed doing it.
