Through the Child Advocates mission our volunteers strive to reduce the likelihood of adverse outcomes for a vulnerable population and to break the intergenerational cycle of child abuse and neglect. Child Advocates receives its case referrals from juvenile and family court judges who have sole authority to appoint a volunteer to serve as Guardian ad litem (Advocate) for an abused or neglected child. Through an investment of time, advocates strategically work with Child Protective Services caseworkers, attorneys, and judges to represent the best interests of children at risk of falling through the cracks of an overburdened system. To produce court reports, each advocate researches the child’s case background and interviews individuals who know the child, such as parents and foster parents, relatives, teachers, and therapists. At court hearings and trials, advocates provide recommendations to judges regarding the children’s permanency plans as well as the medical, psychological, and educational support needed to help them recover and thrive. Our dedicated advocates focus on one child or sibling group at a time to ensure no child falls through the system’s cracks. Providing support and encouragement, advocates bridge a systemic gap and serve as role models for children in need of a positive influence.
