Where there is no insurance, public health programs or trained caregivers. For people living in low- and middle-income countries it is like winning the lottery to have heart surgery. The incidence of congenital heart disease is citied to be anywhere between 4 to 50 children in 1000 live births. You can only imagine the numbers of debilitated people unable to live full and capable lives. In the U.S. these children receive surgery as babies and children. In countries that CardioStart International visits, we find many who make their way into adulthood struggling to keep up with their daily living routines and unable to work or study to support themselves. CardioStart’s focus is to bring heart programs to fruition. We help floundering programs who need a boost with equipment or training to be able to manage cases. Building surgical and cardiology programs to address the suffering. Heart disease is one of the top killers in all nations, yet little is done to address it. We do not put a band aid on the wound.
