California Tendai Monastery
About us
California Tendai uses a more Western adaptation of the traditional Japanese Tendai school of Buddhism, emphasizing inclusivity, meditation, and practical spirituality. Based in Northern California, the community is centered around Ryusenji (Dragon Spring Temple), and it promotes the Tendai doctrine of Ekayana, or the One Vehicle, which unifies all paths to enlightenment. The temple offers weekly talks and services, meditation retreats, and day-long practices, with a focus on making Buddhist teachings accessible to a Western audience. After the 2015 Valley Fire destroyed their original temple, California Tendai has been rebuilding under a Village Temple Model, emphasizing community-driven efforts. The temple's leadership, including Rev. Junshin Chris Nettles, PhD, continues to provide guidance through a combination of traditional Buddhist practices like shikan meditation and a deep commitment to environmental stewardship and social engagement. For more information, you can explore their website: httpe://caltendai.org
