Bushlife Conservancy
About us
Bushlife Conservancy's mission is to conserve biodiversity in the Mana Pools UNESCO site and surrounding Zambezi Valley of Zimbabwe through anti-poaching, infrastructure development, community engagement, and research.
In 2015, poaching in the Zambezi Valley was rampant. Mana Pools National Park was losing an average of one elephant a week to poachers. Nick Murray formed Bushlife Support Unit to operate anti-poaching patrols, and in 2016, Bushlife Conservancy—the US nonprofit—was formed. No elephants have been poached in Mana Pools since 2019. According to Nick, the reason is simple: “Boots on the ground and proper vehicles. It comes down to money and the means to equip rangers appropriately to do their jobs well.” Our goals are to:• End Poaching in the Zambezi Valley by providing logistical support for Zimparks rangers to conduct anti-poaching patrols and operate an informer rewards program. • Protect Iconic Bull Elephants from Legal Hunters by placing collars on iconic bull elephants for protection in hunting concessions adjacent to Mana Pools. • Enhance Infrastructure and Resources to Support Conservation and Protection by maintaining remote bases, preventing boundary encroachment, protecting waterways from illegal gold panning, and promoting reforestation. • Provide Support for the Health, Education, and Welfare of the Local Communities by educating youth about wildlife, conservation, and biodiversity, and helping community members protect livestock and crops from wildlife. • Reintroduce Black Rhinos into the Park by demonstrating sufficient surveillance of Mana Pools National Park.
