About us

Bahari Sisters Inc. is a Baltimore, Maryland based non-profit organization committed to uplifting the status of Kenyan women and girls by engaging in targeted and sustainable initiatives focused on education, career training and healthcare. We recognize that the survival of Kenyan women and girls is increasingly challenged by economic dependency, illiteracy, sexual based violence and marginalization.

Vicki L Jones, Bahari's Founder and Executive Director first traveled to Kenya in 2006. She made connections which developed into friendships, which led her to establish Bahari in 2012. The mission was and is to meet not only immediate needs, but provide life altering programs. Bahari has a small office in the Mwiki community outside Nairobi where Bahari's Program Manager and Project Assistant work. Ms. Jones travels yearly to Kenya to meet with staff, and the women and girls in various communities. Bahari has grown from the early days when Vicki would take personal care items with her and hand out to women. In February 2024 Bahari offered its first annual Menstrual Health Forum where 150 women gained knowledge on menstrual hygiene and received AFRIpads reusable menstrual products. We've provided AFRIpads products to over 500 women and school girls.

We offer workshops on Business and Personal Development. We provide funding for Bookshine High schools (at two locations) for scholarships, computers, uniforms., STEM lab equipment.  Our Food Panty meets the needs of up to 15 families a month. Last year we partnered with Farm to Feed, a surplus produce non-profit in Nairobi, enabling us to add fresh veg to the staples the women already were receiving.  Next year we will be launching a new career training program ~ Sewing as a Career.

Our budget is small, but that does not prevent us from making a difference in the life of each woman and girl that we touch. Additional funding would enable Bahari to increase the number of Menstrual Hygiene Forums and hold them further outside central Nairobi. We would be able to distribute AFRIpads to more school girls, which means less missed school days in the year. We would provide scholarships for students who completed our basic Cosmetology Career classes so they could get additional training to attain certifications.

Bahari thanks each and every donor who it led to support our mission to empower Kenyan women and girls.
