The Australian Animal Poisons Helpline provides free poisons advice, including first aid measures, to the owners of approximately 28,500 pets per year. Accidental poisoning of pets is a significant cause of pain, suffering and death. Poisoning occurs through the animals own actions (e.g. voluntarily eating something dangerous, disturbing a snake), intentional actions of owners seeking to help their pets (e.g. administering a human medication without consulting a veterinarian) or by inadvertent environmental exposure (e.g., cats walking through land sprayed with weed killer, paralysis ticks attaching to a dog walking through bushland). To limit suffering and death there is need for timely poisons advice for pet owners. Poisons information is a highly specialised professional field so much so that veterinarians also call our staff for advice. You can help save a pet’s life by keeping the helpline free with your vote and donation. The next pet we save could be yours. The Animal Poisons Helpline also engages in community education campaigns to inform pet owners of the risks of animal poisoning and their prevention. We also support research activities that aim to prevent and improve outcomes for poisoned pets.
