Water is Basic exists to ensure that every person in South Sudan has access to clean, safe waterâand that local leaders, especially women, are empowered to keep it flowing.
Across South Sudan, more than half the population still lives without reliable access to clean water. For most families, the crisis isnât the absence of wellsâitâs the absence of trained, equipped people who can keep those wells working year after year.
Vision 2030 changes that.
We are scaling a nationwide network of women-led well repair cooperativesâteams of trained pump mechanics who restore water access in days instead of years. These women are rewriting whatâs possible: repairing wells, leading community water systems, earning income, and ensuring girls can stay in school rather than walk for hours each day in search of water.
Our model is simple, local, and built to last:
⢠Train women as certified pump mechanics
⢠Equip each cooperative with spare parts and tools
⢠Partner closely with communities and local government
⢠Strengthen long-term systems that sustain water access
Since 2008, Water is Basic has repaired or drilled more than 2,000 wells, serving over 1.5 million people. Today, women-led teams are restoring water across Northern Bahr el Ghazal and Warrapâand Vision 2030 is expanding this work across all 10 states of South Sudan.
Every repaired well brings health, time, safety, and opportunity back to a community.
Every trained woman brings South Sudan one step closer to lasting water access for all.
