About us

Washington Native Plant Society is a leader in educating its members and others about the value of plants native to the Evergreen State. WNPS is now in the 50th year of advocating for Washington's native plants.

Conservation and advocacy make the Washington Native Plant Society the voice for native plants. Our greatest conservation work is on-the-ground and around the state where hundreds of Society members volunteer their time to restore habitats, strive for good conservation policies, conduct native plant inventories and monitor rare plant populations. Visit our website, WNPS.org/conservation to view our many letters of request for conservation of native flora in Washington state.

Since 1996, research, conservation and education projects have been supported by Society funds, including the WNPS Endowment fund. The annual grants provided around the state provide students, communities, partners and researchers funds for projects that support the WNPS mission.

The Native Plant Stewardship Program is one of the Society's most successful educational efforts. This program offers training on the importance and use of native plants in restoration and landscaping. Community groups partner with local county agencies or cities to support public lands. In return for the training, Native Plant stewards have contributed more than 160,000 hours of volunteer effort.

WNPS has developed a partnership with ACT Now Science to provide the Youth Ecology Education through Restoration program to nine middle schools in the 2025-2026 school year in Washington State, providing biology education on the importance of native plants to support ecosystem biodiversity, through field science activities and the execution of a restoration project in the community. This program is now actively seeking future funding to expand again to grow and serve more schools in the 2026-27 school year, in both the Eastern and Western Washington ecosystems. We are excited to continue supporting students, and well as expanding educational opportunities for the Native Plant Steward volunteers. Service areas can include volunteer options for workplace contributions. Please ask if you are interested in supporting the YEER program in your area.

Members of the Washington Native Plant Society share a common interest in Washington’s unique and diverse flora. We represent all levels of botanical knowledge, from professionals and experienced amateur botanists to beginners just becoming curious about the beautiful plants and habitats of our state.
