Sunshine Animal Sanctuary is a 501(c)3 non profit that opened in March 2023 in AZ.  I, Kelly, am the founder, and opening this sanctuary has been a mighty responsibility to take on and a lifechanging path that I'm incredibly proud of choosing.   I'm a Kindergarten teacher, tutor, swim coach and sanctuary founder.  I believe in giving the rescued souls we've taken in the BEST possible life and that means being responsible, transparent, ethical, honest and always having their best interests at the forefront of every decision made for the sanctuary.  One of the greatest treasures as an educator is to share my passion and love for the wildies that I've advocated for and have rescued.  We've welcomed many kids to visit, volunteer and meet the sunshine herd and experience what a wild horse/burro sanctuary is all about.  The smiles & love in their little eyes and the magic felt in their souls is something that I will be forever grateful to witness.  The love, gentleness and patience the sunshine herd souls show the kids is magical to witness. 

Meet our Rescues - 

Ireland, a Sorrel Yearling, was our very 1st rescue adoption from an AZ auction in March 2023.  She's now a stunning 4 yr old mare, lovingly known as our resident "Firecracker".

RJ, a 20 yr old BLM donkey was rescued from an AZ auction in June 2023.  We were told he was 9 yrs old only to find out at his 1st vet visit w Dr. Hulse, who did a dental float & read his BLM brand, that he was actually 20 yrs "young".  We found a large chunk missing from his tongue and scarring on his legs/ears from very likely being used for "Donkey roping" which is horrific.  He's lovingly known as "Mr. Mohawk Man" and is THE sweetest most gentle soul you'll ever meet. 

Lil Bobby, Alpine wild horse colt, is 2 1/2 yrs old rescued from an online wild horse auction in November 2022 when Lil Bobby was a brand new foal born at the auction house.  He's a soul who has a zest for life that is unmatched. He is our Jolly Ball King, our bucking colt who zooms in our turnout pasture w/wild joy & freedom.  Lil Bob is lovingly known as our "Ninja (occasionally Naughty ninja :) ).  

We stand strong & mighty with our tiny rescue herd of 3 wild souls. It is our life's mission to give them the BEST sanctuary life possible. We struggle w/growth & donations as we aren't intaking new rescues but we ARE responsibly taking the BEST care of the sunshine herd & would LOVE to responsibly take in another donkey friend in the future if and when we can fill up our Emergency Vet Fund, have our monthly feed bill covered and have funds for their regular farrier/dental visits.
