Silicon Valley is one of the most influential regions in the world, but also faces problems such as a widening income disparity and inequities in our schools. Children in underserved communities face systemic and structural obstacles to a high-quality education, particularly math education. As a result, these students are left unprepared to succeed in college and join the workforce, particularly in high-paying high-tech careers, and are thus unable to break the cycle of poverty. These issues have been heightened by the COVID-19 crisis. Students who were previously struggling in the classroom now face even greater obstacles to learning. Even those with internet access and devices must adjust to new class formats, distractions at home, the loss of social interaction, and other concerns. For other children, the digital divide has become even wider, isolating them from education opportunities almost entirely. Aspirations for college and a financially viable future dwindle when faced with such challenges. With your support, SVEF - Silicon Valley's largest education nonprofit - can continue bringing STEM learning to underserved students, supporting educators as they shift to distance learning, and providing programs that address the learning loss that will occur in our students as a result of the pandemic.
