About us

Savannah Station TRP is a 501 c3 nonprofit PATH Intl. Premier Accredited Center operating from a beautiful 20-acre facility in Yukon, Oklahoma. It is the only PATH Intl therapeutic riding program in the Oklahoma City Metropolitan area. The program focuses on people with diagnosed cognitive and physical special needs.  Ages 4 through adulthood are accepted through an application process into weekly equine assisted services classes at no cost to their families.  Therapeutic riding uses equine-assisted activities and services to improve the cognitive, physical, emotional, and social wellbeing of people with a wide range of disabilities and medical conditions.

The horse’s ability to carry us sets them apart as a service animal. Horses move in a three-dimensional gait, similar to that of humans. By working with individuals who suffer from the effects of profound physical disabilities, physicians have found that the complex act of riding a horse produces improvements in balance, circulation, and strength that cannot be achieved by other therapeutic means. For our riders who use wheelchairs or other devices for mobility, it may be the only time they feel the sensation of walking. Additionally, for riders with cognitive and developmental challenges, connecting with and riding a horse brings increased self-control, focus, and improved verbal and non-verbal communication.  Each horse has a different strength they bring to the program that makes a difference for our riders.   It may be their build, their temperament or their gait that supplies just the right type of assistance for our special riders. Currently, there are 15 horses at Savannah Station: 13 working horses, one horse in training and one retired horse.

At Savannah Station, through time spent with horses people with special needs are finding hope and healing.  Starting with the Fall schedule, the organization will be serving 101 participants representing a variety of diseases and disabilities who come weekly to participate in equine assisted services; riding and ground classes. The current age breakdown of participants: 75% are 12 and under, 15% are 13-18 and 10% over 18. The many times overlooked and left out have found a place of acceptance in the kind eye of a horse.  A place where their uniqueness is embraced and their hard-fought victories are celebrated.   We can testify to bodies gaining strength, surgeries going unneeded and first words spoken.  Currently, there are 63 families on the waiting list. When the Fall session begins 16 of those students will be in a class leaving 47 on the waiting list.
