Rides and Reins is a 501c3 founded in 1999. Founder Don Elias felt the call to do more as he watched parents of children with disabilities turned away from equine therapy due to the expense.Twenty-five years later, Rides and Reins has evolved into a one-of-its-kind organization that is committed to serving the needs of those with disabilities through equine therapy.

Rides and Reins fills a community need for equine therapy for children and adults with intellectual and physical disabilities. 2026 marks our 27th year of providing equine therapy to children and adults with special needs. Rides & Reins provides riders with developmental, emotional and physical needs the experience of relaxation through horseback riding. The walking gait of the horse simulates the movement of a healthy person’s pelvis when walking on two legs. During a therapeutic riding session, this action relaxes and stimulates unused muscles while building muscle tone, improving balance, coordination and joint mobility.

Individuals having special needs often form a unique relationship with a horse that can lead to self-confidence, patience, and increased self-esteem. Medical professionals, as well as the American Physical Therapy Association, recognize the positive qualities of therapeutic horseback riding.

In any given year, there are approximately 250 children aged 3 to 17 and 10 individuals over 18 who are enrolled in equine therapy and group therapy.
