The Piece of Heaven Project (POHP) is a not-for-profit farm animal sanctuary located in Burton, British Columbia, dedicated to to providing a safe haven for rescued farm animals and promoting a compassionate, sustainable lifestyle. Founded in 2015 by Sharon Starmer  , a woman of colour and her husband Mark a "thalidomide baby" born with one hand. The sanctuary has snowballed since rescuing their first animal, currently we provide  forever homes to over 100 farm animals and their many dogs.  The sanctuary is run entirely by volunteers including Sharon and Mark who dedicate their lives to the care and welfare of animals and the protecting the environment.

Due to our growth in  the number of animals we now share our lives with, and the change in climate our safe , fenced pasture land has become overgrazed. Thus we are required to purchase hay all the year round ( rather than just when it is under snow). This model is not financially sustainable. We are raising money for fencing , which will enable us create additional safe pasture areas. This will enable us to strive forward and provide more animals with a  home free from fear and abuse.

When animals live without fear their personalities develop , as is seen with domestic dogs and cats. We have many 'personalities' such as the Maggie who was rescued from a breeding program together with her daughter Bonnie. Having had her horns and many of babies stolen she was rightly fearful of people with a look of hurt and sadness when she arrived at POHP. With love and patience she is now relaxed, content , enjoying motherhood and trusts people enough to be hand fed. Cedric is our friendliest , nosiest goat who always the first to come and say hello when entering the enclosure. Yet when he arrived at POHP he was terrified . He had been rejected by his herd, and had his horns burned off. Now he knows he is safe and loved. Anne-Marie and Nancy two of our charming, friendly pigs were rescued from the streets of Calgary when their previous owners realised they had grown too big to be house pigs.
