By the time most people qualify for hospice, they are eligible for Medicare coverage. Medicare does cover hospice care, but there are limits to what is covered. For example, Medicare covers doctors’ and nurses’ services, durable medical equipment, and drugs for pain and symptom management. It does not cover 24-hour hospice care nor does it cover room and board at a nursing home or hospice facility or at a person’s home. Not every patient fits into these “covered” categories. Patients who have limited financial means, no family support to provide caregiving, and those who are uninsured. And for many families, the burden of care for their loved one simply becomes too challenging for family members. Too often patients end up in emergency departments for pain and symptom management. Our Lady of Peace is here for those whose options are few.

Patients who receive care at Our Lady of Peace residential hospice facility have the opportunity to receive care as they wish. Through open communication with doctors, nurses and other staff, patients and/or their loved ones are able to have a dialogue with the medical staff about care options. This type of open communication helps to ensure that patients’ wishes are met and that the patient and loved ones are fully educated on the dying process and different care choices. Studies show that open communication with doctors and other medical care providers at the end of life increases peace of mind and lessens the anxiety of patients and caregiver

What makes Our Lady of Peace unique is that we provide end of life care at our Residential Hospice Facility in Saint Paul, Minnesota, at no cost to patients of their families. Medicare covers about 20% of the average daily cost of care at the Facility. Your generous support helps Our Lady of Peace cover the remaining 80% of costs to provide this unique service.  There are 21 private rooms available to care for adults with any terminal illness.

Our Lady of Peace is a refuge for people whose options have been exhausted. People are able to come to Our Lady of Peace and fill their final days receiving the care, love and attention they need, surrounded by their loved ones.
