Wetlands are a vital part of any landscape. They act like a heartbeat on the life of the broader river system and from their health, we can also judge the health of the river and the broader landscape that depends on it. Wetlands provide an essential aquatic habitat for a myriad of species; they help regulate water flows in river systems, including mitigating flood events; they replenish ground water; provide vital nursery services for breeding endemic and migratory birds; support agricultural production and offer important tourism, recreation, and research opportunities; and are an important part of the Australian social fabric. Wetlands also hold life affirming cultural values for Aboriginal People, whose connections with rivers and wetlands of the Murray-Darling Basin go back more than 50,000 years. The MURRAY DARLING WETLANDS Working Group knows that the solution to addressing wetland health along the Murray Darling lies with people working together. To continue bringing together the interests of farmers, irrigators, conservationists, businesses and communities we have established ourselves as the leading expert in both stakeholder coordination and on ground project delivery that has proven to work. It is these two elements that are critical to solving the question of wetland health in the Murray Darling Basin. But for us to continue delivering outcomes that improve wetland health throughout the Murray Darling Basin, we must be a sustainable organisation well into the future. We now look to the next 25 years and beyond. Your donation will help us build the capacity of our organisation through the purchase of vital equipment like pumps and water meters to help deliver water to wetlands that have become dry and isolated from the rivers and creeks, and help us prevent the further loss of birds, trees, fish and frogs from these beautiful places.
