We’re a volunteer driven, not-for-profit combating loneliness in Australia, voted one of the top 9 charities in the world addressing loneliness. With 1 in 7 Australian adults experiencing high levels of loneliness right now, we work to raise awareness of this significant issue through research, wellbeing initiatives, short courses and practical services. The primary support we offer is Friendline; a free phone service providing a chat. For many experiencing loneliness, it’s the only conversation they’ll have that day. 98% of regular callers report significantly reduced feelings of loneliness and 89% are better able to cope when feeling lonely. We also offer one-on-one counselling sessions where people can talk to experienced or student practitioners via Telehealth. Additionally, we undertake research work to understand the prevalence of loneliness in Australia. Our pioneering studies have revealed the pervasive stigma surrounding loneliness, with a notable correlation between income levels and its prevalence. Building on the knowledge gained from our research and service provision we’ve recently established the Australian Loneliness Research Foundation. This Foundation will work with academics, community groups and people with a lived experience of loneliness to lead community informed research into loneliness and raise more awareness about this pressing health concern.
