We are a small scale ethical rescue that is completely self funded and run by volunteers. Ethical rescue to us means that we only take on animals we can afford to feed, care for, get vet work for and rehabilitate and rehome. Ethical rescue means we don’t euthanise for space, we only use it as a tool to prevent suffering for which there is no other reasonable remedy. Ethical rescue means that we say no to new arrivals once our places are full, so we work to get cats and kittens into their safe forever homes to free up space for the seemingly unending numbers of felines in need of safe haven. We usually have up to 40 felines on our books at any one time, and feeding, housing, cleaning, parasite control, desexing, vaccinating and microchipping these animals doesn’t come cheap. Our vet bills alone are around $30,000.00 (au) per year for the 100 or so animals that come through our doors each year. In my role as chief kitten sniffer I am constantly seeking out the best priced consumables for the rescue, always thinking of our next fundraising initiative, always balancing moneys out against moneys in. Without help from people in the community we simply cannot help as many animals as we would like to. Community help means we can do our core job. More support means we do some outreach for people who might be in a tight spot with a cat that needs desexing or other vet care.
