Educational Communities Worldwide Inc. is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization registered in the United States that works primarily in Ghana, with additional programming in Nigeria and other African countries. Our mission is to expand access to quality education and economic opportunity for under-resourced students and communities by replacing inequality with access.
Earlier this year, Educational Communities Worldwide piloted the EduCom Digital Hub College Preparation Program at Bunkpurugu Senior High Technical School, a rural secondary school in northern Ghana. This initiative was developed through three years of research and implemented as a doctoral capstone project by CEO Lawrence Fianko at the University of Southern California School of Social Work. The program was evaluated using pre- and post-exam data, mock examinations, and teacher assessments.
The intensive three-month program focused on academic reinforcement, digital literacy, and college readiness for students preparing for the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE). Teachers volunteered evenings, weekends, and after-school hours to deliver instruction supported by laptops, internet access, Google Classroom, visual learning tools, and continuous academic feedback. Notably, many participating students had never used a computer prior to this program.
Early outcome data demonstrates significant impact, with preliminary analysis showing 95–99% success rates across core subjects, including Mathematics, English, Science, and Social Studies. Teachers consistently attributed these gains to improved access to technology, structured academic support, and extended learning beyond the traditional school day.
As a direct result of the program, nearly all participating students met university admission requirements. Many have already received college admission offers, while others are awaiting placement. Importantly, students who delayed enrollment did so due to financial barriers rather than academic performance, underscoring the effectiveness of the intervention and the ongoing need for scholarship support.
Educational Communities Worldwide takes a holistic, evidence-based approach that combines education access, digital inclusion, mentorship, and workforce preparation. Our goal is to scale this proven model to reach additional rural schools and to fund post-secondary education for qualified students who lack the financial means to enroll.
Our vision is a world where talent exists everywhere and opportunity does not depend on geography, and where strategic investment can close the rural–urban education gap in Ghana and beyond.
